This guest is a testament to the hope and strength that sustains survivors. Gina was abused by a parent at an early age, running the family household by cooking, paying bills and mothering her brother and sister, all while her mother, who was addicted to pain medications, lay in the bed in the living room.
Her life outside the home also provided challenges. She was bullied and made fun of by schoolmates for having half of her face paralyzed due to Bell's Palsy. Despite all she faced, she persisted in life, seeking redemption simply by receiving praise by middle school teachers. Her own grandparents extended a sense of family, self-worth and love.
A mother herself at age 21, she found the inner strength to achieve high level graduate education, as well as starting programs for children in her community that provided the love and support that at times lacked in her challenged life.
Please listen to this heartfelt story.
